Leading the Way with Joanne Burke

Leading from Work

How did your career develop?

I have always been inspired by the passion that drives our clients to success. My career started in investment banking and then transitioned to wealth management.  Developing deep relationships with founders and entrepreneurs has given me great joy throughout my career. I have learned from my clients that taking risks, pivoting when things do not go as planned, and investing in yourself and relationships is highly rewarding.

What’s the most important career advice you’ve received?

There are three: First, capitalize on every opportunity to interact with clients. Second, learn to work collaboratively - it takes teamwork to get deals done. Finally, be humble and don’t take yourself too seriously.

What is your role at Goldman Sachs, and how do you support clients?

I am a private banker and work with ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients on identifying and implementing creative borrowing solutions.

How do you lead by example?

Mentoring, having a strong work ethic, digging deeply into problems, and finding creative solutions.

What are some interesting themes and/or trends that you see in your area of expertise?

We are in a period of explosive growth in technology-related innovation. Strong capital market activity continues to create new wealth for entrepreneurs who are often looking to diversify their concentrated wealth through leverage.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Working with incredibly talented colleagues and our inspiring clients.

How do you find motivation and inspiration?

Passion and persistence (or “p squared” as I tell my children) as anything worth doing well takes time and effort.

What is one thing you make time for every week?

Staying connected with friends and family. Both of my parents are Irish immigrants and I have a large family based in Ireland that keep me laughing and grounded.

What is your favorite weekend activity?

Dancing and listening to EDM with friends.

How do you stay healthy – mentally, physically or both?

Running, biking, skiing, and laughing!

Leading for the future

How do we provide more leadership opportunities to women in the workforce?

Provide more promotional tracks to choose from and encourage work flexibility.

What are some of your professional and personal goals?

My professional goal is to be a good role model and leader. Personally, I would love to live abroad in France.

What suggestions would you give to women who are starting their careers?

Have presence and be confident! Create a storng network of sponsors and mentors to guide and to support you.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?

Still aspiring to be the best person I can be.
