Leading the Way with Laura Sanchez

Leading from Work

How did your career develop?

I joke that I went from selling shampoo and detergent at Procter & Gamble after college to selling Procter & Gamble stock at Goldman Sachs, though I am far from a stockbroker.

What’s the most important career advice you’ve received?

To be myself.

What is your role at Goldman Sachs, and how do you support clients?

I am a Private Wealth Advisor. I help ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals and families to identify and to achieve their investing and wealth-planning goals.

How do you lead by example?

I make having dinner with my kids a priority.

What are some interesting themes and/or trends that you see in your area of expertise?

There are two — environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing and a desire by clients to work with a diverse team.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Forming meaningful long-term relationships — so many of our clients have become lifelong friends.

Leading from Home

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Let your personal style prevail.

How do you find motivation and inspiration?

It’s been incredible to watch the philanthropic work of clients and to see their focus on equality. As a Latina woman and a first-generation college graduate, I know their work is making a tremendous difference in the world.

What is one thing you make time for every week?

Spending time with my 90-year-old mother.

What is your favorite weekend activity?

Taking in a San Francisco Giants game with my kids.

How do you stay healthy – mentally, physically, or both?

Meditation, practicing self-compassion, my Peloton bike, and hiking.

What is your favorite book, movie, podcast, or artwork?

My favorite book is Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristin Neff, PhD.

What is one app on your phone that you can’t live without and why?

The MLB app (see answer above!) and the HP 12C app, because it saves room in my purse.

Leading for the Future

How do we provide more leadership opportunities to women in the workforce?

We need to show confidence in women by promoting them before we think they are ready. How many people say, “That guy is too young for that job?”

What are some of your professional and personal goals?

I want to continue to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone, be the best parent I can be, and find more ways to pay it forward.

What suggestions would you give to women who are starting their career?

Don’t step out of the workforce; it is too hard to get back in.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years?

I hope to have more time and energy to attend baseball games with family and friends!
