The State of Private Markets

Over the past decade, private capital investments have surged from $4 trillion to $14.5 trillion.¹ In this video series, Kristin Olson, global head of Alternative Capital Markets at Goldman Sachs, discusses the drivers behind the growth in private assets, as well as the trends, challenges, and opportunities investors can watch for in the alternatives market.

New Tailwinds for Private Investments

Individual and high net worth investors are driving the surge in private investments.

Alternative investments (including private equity, private credit, private real estate, hedge funds, among others) are subject to less regulation than other types of pooled vehicles and may involve a high degree of risk, including the risk of total loss of an investor's capital, the use of leverage, lack of liquidity, and volatility of returns. Alternative Investments may involve complex tax and legal structures and accordingly are only suitable for sophisticated investors.

Here are several benefits to investing with us:

Network

Goldman Sachs is one of the world’s largest private markets investors, with more than $400 billion in alternative investments, and decades of experience building long-term relationships with strong fund managers to drive portfolio performance and value.

Open-architecture

Our offerings range from proprietary, in-house funds to hybrid, co-managed strategies to highly curated and vetted opportunities from external managers.

Diversification

Our alternative investments span asset classes, sectors, geographies and themes, and we work with you to establish thoughtful commitment planning and portfolio construction modeling.

Key Considerations for Alternatives

How do private assets compare to public equities? Private or alternative assets, like all investments, carry varying degrees of risks, timelines and return potential. Here are several key characteristics of private assets and how they compare to public equities:

Long-term horizon

  • Private assets are long-term investments with funds often having timelines of 10+ years, versus the immediate nature of public markets.

Diversification

  • Mitigating risk in private assets requires thoughtful diversification across sub-asset classes, managers, vintage years and geographies, similar to how investors diversify public equity exposure.

Illiquidity

  • Alternative funds often have lock-up periods and irregular distributions that limit liquidity. Conversely, most public equities are highly liquid.

Annual commitments

  • Consistent, annual commitments to alternative investments are required to meet long-term targets and mitigate vintage-year risk.

Investor qualifications

  • There may be certain requirements (e.g., accredited Investor status and minimum investment size) to be eligible to invest. Public markets typically do not have minimums or thresholds.

Fees

  • Private funds typically charge ongoing management fees, as well as carried interest fees to create an alignment of incentives between the manager and investors. These fees are generally higher than those in the public markets, and investors should assess returns on a net basis.

  • Your advisor can review your wealth planning goals, portfolio and risk profile to determine if alternative assets are a good fit for you. If alternatives are suitable for your portfolio, your advisor will recommend funds and opportunities from various sub-asset classes. Our offerings include third-party/external, co-managed/hybrid and in-house, proprietary funds.
